Galley

The Base Jumper galley is designed with the home gourmet in mind. It's fully equipped with all the essentials you need to whip up a storm wherever you are -just bring the local produce or freshly caught seafood. The knives and other utensils are chef-quality and there's plenty of space to spread out while you work. But, we didn't stop there. We sourced some of the best leisure appliances too.

The design conscious 110L Waeco with separate freezer compartment is quiet, reliable, and efficient. Unlike other brands of portable fridges, the Waeco fridge doesn't need to be level to perform. Waeco has a unique compressor that is designed to be portable. It can run while on up to a 30 degree angle and on rough corrugated tracks without losing its efficiency.

Knowing some food tastes best when grilled, we installed the Spinflo four burner gas stove with grill and Dometic rangehood. The Truma hotwater heater runs off either mains power when you're hooked up or gas when you're free camping. It goes from 0 to 100 (degrees Celsius that is) in just 30 minutes. With a 14L capacity, there's plenty of hot water for both cooking and showers.

Bathroom

To optimise shower space in the bathroom, RoadCraft opted for the Dometic swivel seat toilet which swings out of the way when not in use. The combination of a Cobra slide-rail shower and a Truma hotwater heater means you can have the water flow, volume, and temperature to fully enjoy your shower. We serious adventurers get wet sometimes so we designed the bathroom to double as a drying room. The heater outlet supplies warm air (regardless of whether the engine is running) providing express drying for towels and clothing.

Living

Being able to kick back and relax when the adventure is done for the day is key to the Base Jumper experience. We've gone to a lot of trouble to ensure that you have the gear, layout, and comfort to really 'chill out'. Not only is the wraparound couch inviting, it's exceptionally comfortable thanks to the premium laminated foam upholstery. The graduated foam construction is specially designed for dual purpose sitting and sleeping comfort.

Lay back, pick up the remote, and switch on the Majestic home theatre system. Watch your favourite DVD or view your photos on the 15" flat LCD screen. Or, if music takes your fancy, the system can handle just about any format you could think of (CD/MP3/MP4 or radio). What's more, you can listen to it in 4-channel surround sound and hook your iPod into the auxiliary input.

Heating

There's no better way to see how the Base Jumper stands out from the crowd than to take her away in winter. With SL grade polystyrene insulation in the roof, R2.0 insulation in the walls, carpet on the floors, thermoflex on the walls, and vinyl headlining on the ceiling, the van is designed to be warm from the outside in. The Eberspächer diesel heater ensures the whole vehicle stays toasty, day and night, without the need to towel off the moisture build up on the windows. The thermal-backed curtains fit closely to all windows to complete the insulation as well as provide privacy.

Outdoor

The Base Jumper comes with compact hooded barbeque, outdoor furniture, and an outside shower plus optional customized awning so you can get the most out of the outdoors as soon as you drive away. Rest assured each piece fits snuggly in its own storage compartment so it won't break or rattle.

Cab Equipment

Design of the VW Crafter was a joint project between VW and Mercedes Benz.  Since the Mercedes team got the interior, you won't be surprised that the Crafter cab setup is second to none.  It's as functional and driver-friendly up front as it is spacious and versatile behind.

The cab of the Crafter has plenty to offer - room for your documents, room for tools, room for drink bottles, and of course room for you.  The ergonomic design as well as the height and angle adjustment of the driver's seat ensures optimal usability and relaxing, fatigue-free driving whatever the shape and size of the driver.  This means you feel better and concentrate better - a critical safety factor.  The generous cab size, armrests for both front seats, and cruise control deliver top-level comfort which pays dividends on long journeys in particular.  The additional sound deadening, climatic air-conditioning system with outside temperature display and stereo with CD player further add to cab comfort.  And when you arrive at your destination, the driver and passenger front seats swivel to transform the cab to the front lounge.  Now that's clever use of space.

Base Van

From its distinctive front grille to its ergonomically designed cab and dashboard, the Crafter is an example of Volkswagen's dedication to improving the customers' experience.  The look is not simply related to a more commanding road presence, but to practicality as well. The grille for instance, with its widely spaced horizontal lines, ensures that more air can reach the cabin. In addition, a step at the base of the grille will enable better access to the engine and to the windscreen for any maintenance required.

With the addition of 16" alloys, metallic paint, and an optional custom roof rack, the Base Jumper L4 is turning heads from the Catlins to Kaitaia.

Engine

With 50 years of German engineering standards, the VW Crafter is built to perform under pressure.  In the engine room, the advanced 2.5 litre, 5 cylinder common rail Turbo Diesel Injected (TDI) engine pumps 100kw of pure power and a hefty 300nm of torque.  With extremely high tractive power, the Crafter goes about its business effortlessly and economically.
Despite its enormous size and load capacity, the Crafter's common rail engine technology, its standard six-speed manual gearbox and additional cleaning measures such as the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) keep its fuel consumption figures surprisingly low, ensuring that the Crafter is as frugal as it is practical. And what's more, the Crafter meets the Euro 4 emission standard - currently the benchmark for light commercial vehicles.

Gearbox

The lightweight Shiftmatic gearbox combines the functionality of an automatic with the characteristics of a manual. The Shiftmatic can be operated in either manual or automatic mode. In automatic mode the gears are automatically selected and for those times where extra acceleration is needed there is a kick-down function. You get all the benefits of a manual gearbox without the need for a manual clutch.  Great for one-legged drivers.

Steering

The steering wheel position is similar to that of a passenger car with an adjustment for rake and reach adding to driver comfort and safety.

Suspension

The up-rated Base Jumper L4 suspension including up-rated front axle and rear shocks improves vehicle performance and reduces tyre wear.  The greater GVW (3880 kg) gives a better ride meaning you'll enjoy the drive as much as the destination.

Brakes

The Crafter's hefty 300mm brake discs up front and 298mm brake discs at the rear with two brake callipers for every wheel, give you the added reassurance of a responsive, high-performance brake unit.  And when it comes to safety, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) teamed with Electronic Brake-Pressure Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) and traction control ensure optimal driving safety.  The ABS prevents wheel locking and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) disperses the braking force to both the front and rear axles.  Now you can tackle challenging roads and conditions with confidence.

Safety

Comprehensively equipped with a first class brake system and extensive active and passive safety features, the VW Crafter raises the bar for safety engineering in its class.  The ultra-modern safety package includes Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) teamed with Electronic Brake-Pressure Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) and traction control.  Whether driving in bad weather or in poor road conditions - the Crafter makes the best of every situation. The latest-generation adaptive ESP adjusts to the conditions for good cornering.

With a safety inspired brake system and full-sized driver and passenger airbags on board, the Crafter offers optimal driver and passenger protection.  The robust structure of the Crafter  body with laser welding is engineered to provide high body stiffness and optimal protection for the driver and passengers in the event of an accident.

Tanks

Internal baffles have been installed into the water tanks. These significantly reduce the movement of fluid when a tank is less than full and consequently, improve drivability - especially when braking or going around corners. The tanks are carefully fitted up under the vehicle ensuring they are not the lowest point on the vehicle and well out of harm's way if obstacles are encountered.

Energy

Long Life Energy System
If you're going to build OCVs that can tackle the most remote tracks, then you've got to have pretty special energy supplies. Conventional vans are built to transport you from campground to campground. At the end of the day, you hook up to mains power and everything works - voilà. We wanted an OCV that allows you the freedom to camp over anywhere - without being reliant on a 240V hook up. So, we got the boys in the back room thinking. What they delivered is a unique long life energy system. The combination of a 600w 12V inverter and two 220A/H 6V batteries means you can use all your equipment and appliances anytime, anywhere. The batteries supply the power and the inverter transforms it into the current you need to run the appliances and equipment. The Base Jumper system will give you adequate power to last about four days without starting the engine or hooking up to the mains. So, when you're in your Base Jumper, the wilderness is yours to explore.

Service

As the owner of a Base Jumper, not only do you become part of the RoadCraft extended family but, you automatically join the family of VW owners. The VW team are as committed as we are to ensure you have trouble free motoring.  All new Base Jumper L4s  come with a 4 year or 200,000 kilometres (whichever comes first) full-vehicle warranty, 24 hour assistance for 3 years, plus a 12 year anti-corrosion warranty and three year paint defect guarantee to ensure maximum body life.

Having your Base Jumper serviced won't break the bank as maintenance intervals extend to a near-record breaking 40,000km on the Crafter or two years under normal operating conditions.  And if your vehicle is out of action, the Volkswagen Roadside Assistance programme is there to support you 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, with technical assistance (in cases of immobilisation due to mechanical problems), non-technical assistance (in cases such as a flat tyre or running out of fuel), and help with lock-outs and lost keys for the first three years of the vehicle's life.  Now that's a pretty caring family.

Self-Containment

All RoadCraft vehicles have self containment certification. A self-contained campervan is designed to meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants for a minimum of three days, without requiring any external services or discharging any waste. Fresh water for drinking and cooking is stored in tanks. Waste water is collected in waste water tanks and disposed of via dump station facilities, connected to a proper sewerage scheme. A self-contained vehicle used properly, will have no adverse effects on the environment.

Sleeping

Whether it’s single, queen, or king, the beds are big and comfortable. The upholstery is thick and contoured to ensure you get a great night’s sleep. With all models, you have the option of adding a small bed to the swivel seats in the front so you can take the l’il nipper as well.

Basejumper L4

Remember touring Europe in a VW Kombi - mattress in the back and mates in the front?  All you needed was a map, your sunnies, your jandals and lots of beer.  Life was simple - it was one big party.  Since then, there's been marriage, mortgage, and family.

Now you can relive those carefree days exploring your own backyard in a new generation VW.  RoadCraft has teamed up with Volkswagen to bring you the brand new Base Jumper L4.  Built on the VW Crafter van, the L4 is a revolution in vehicle design.  We've taken New Zealand's most popular campervan design and stretched it out to 6.9m so it's big enough for four.  Now you can take the kids with you every time you head for the hills.  The L4 retains the sleek and nimble profile that Base Jumper OCVs are renowned for with the addition of two more beds - without sacrificing living space.  The unique bunk bed design means the l'il nippers can sleep up front at night and also sit up front while travelling.  The passenger seats are comfortable and safe (shoulder seat belts) as well as having great viewing both out the window and, when they're tired of the scenery, at the front cabin entertainment system.   It'll be like Europe in the Kombi all over again - except for the comfort, space, storage, warmth, speed - the list goes on.
