Galley

The Base Jumper galley is designed with the home gourmet in mind. It's fully equipped with all the essentials you need to whip up a storm wherever you are -just bring the local produce or freshly caught seafood. The knives and other utensils are chef-quality and there's plenty of space to spread out while you work. But, we didn't stop there. We sourced some of the best leisure appliances too.

The design conscious 110L Waeco fridge with separate freezer compartment is quiet, reliable, and efficient. Unlike other brands of portable fridges, the Waeco fridge doesn't need to be level to perform. Waeco has a unique compressor that is designed to be portable. It can run while on up to a 30 degree angle and on rough corrugated tracks without losing its efficiency.

Knowing some food tastes best when grilled, we installed the Spinflo four burner gas stove with grill and Dometic rangehood. The Truma hotwater heater runs off either mains power when you're hooked up or gas when you're free camping. It goes from 0 to 100 (degrees Celsius that is) in just 30 minutes. With a 14L capacity, there's plenty of hot water for both cooking and showers.

Bathroom

To optimise shower space in the bathroom, RoadCraft opted for the Dometic swivel seat toilet which, swings out of the way when not in use. The combination of a Cobra slide-rail shower and a Truma hotwater heater means you can have the water flow, volume, and temperature to fully enjoy your shower. We serious adventurers get wet sometimes, so we designed the bathroom to double as a drying room. The heater outlet supplies warm air (regardless of whether the engine is running) and the heated towel rail provides express drying for towels and clothing.

Living

Being able to kick back and relax when the adventure is done for the day is key to the Base Jumper experience. We've gone to a lot of trouble to ensure that you have the gear, layout, and comfort to really 'chill out'. Not only is the wraparound couch inviting, it's exceptionally comfortable thanks to the premium laminated foam upholstery. The graduated foam construction is specially designed for dual purpose sitting and sleeping comfort.

Lay back, pick up the remote, and switch on the Majestic home theatre system. Watch your favourite DVD or view your photos on the 15" flat LCD screen. Or, if music takes your fancy, the system can handle just about any format you could think of (CD/MP3/MP4 or radio). What's more, you can listen to it in 4-channel surround sound and hook your iPod into the auxiliary input.

Heating

There's no better way to see how the Base Jumper stands out from the crowd than to take her away in winter. With SL grade polystyrene insulation in the roof, carpet on the floors, and thermoflex on the roof and walls, the van is designed to be warm from the outside in. The Eberspächer diesel heater ensures the whole vehicle stays toasty, day and night, without the need to towel off the moisture build up on the windows. The thermal-backed curtains fit closely to all windows to complete the insulation as well as provide privacy.

Outdoor

The Base Jumper comes with compact hooded barbeque, outdoor furniture, and an outside shower plus optional customized awning so you can get the most out of the outdoors as soon as you drive away. Rest assured each piece fits snuggly in its own storage compartment so it won't break or rattle.

Cab Equipment

The Base Jumper cab is comfortable, safe, and serves as mission control. Compared with other motorhomes, the Ducato cab has:

  • more room
  • more visibility
  • better ergonomics and functionality
  • more drawers, more storage compartments, more shelves
  • less noise
  • more comfortable seats for driver and passengers

Comfort - The clever guys at Fiat went to a lot of trouble to achieve optimal ergonomic comfort (the best combination of room and driving position). The result - comfort on par with that of a car.

It doesn't matter what shape you are, the optimised confinement and comfort features make it possible to have a 'made-to-measure' seat by combining the adjustments and fixtures available.

Entertainment - The steering wheel controls for the CD player allow you to adjust the volume and mode without having to take your hands off the wheel. Now that's ease - and safety too.

Base Van

The Fiat Ducato oozes style and intelligence. Whichever way you look at it - from the front, side, or back, the Ducato is an ideal base for an adventurous campervan. The redesigned Fiat Ducato was released in 2006 and now sets the benchmark for most commercial vehicles in this segment of the market.

The front

The headlamps are placed high on the front of the vehicle to give a better view of the road and ensure that minor dings won't damage them. When you need to clean the windshield after some heavy back-road touring, you can rest your foot on the foot support (with antislip surface for maximum safety) even if you are wearing wet or muddy shoes.

Thanks to the large windshield and optimal positioning of the door pillars and side windows, everything can be readily seen, including low obstacles or other cars coming around a blind corner or from behind.

The side

Looking at the vehicle side on, you can easily appreciate its sturdiness and dynamism thanks to:

  • A steeply raked windshield designed for less drag
  • The big protective front bumper linked seamlessly to the side mouldings
  • The lengthwise groove endowing the sides with elegance and linearity
  • Big wide-angled wing mirrors with built-in direction indicators.

Getting into the van couldn't be easier with two new devices adopted for the sliding doors:

  • The ergonomically styled suitcase-like handles ensure a firm grip and whether you're a righty or a lefty, you can open the side doors with either hand
  • The upper slide rail makes the movement smoother.

The back

The rear bumper has reflectors built into it and includes an antislip step which allows access through the rear doors. The twin doors have a protective moulding which takes the brunt of any knocks. The vertical light clusters (tail and stop lights, reversing lights, direction indicators and fog lights) are located high so they are protected against any minor impacts. The third stop mounted in the spoiler atop the rear doors is also highly visible.

When sitting in the van with the rear doors open, the view is all the more enjoyable. The Base Jumper has high doors that open to 270 degrees so you’ll never have to miss another jaw dropping view.

Engine

The Euro-4, 16-valve Multijet engine has outstanding peak torque and the most highly sophisticated rail generation. The engine has been designed according to the criteria of maximum rationality, comfort, efficiency and reliability. The results:

  • Excellent efficiency levels resulting in fuel economy and minimised emissions
  • Extremely reduced maintenance requirements
  • Muted running and reduced vibration
  • Reliability and long service life, verified in over 7,000,000 km of road tests.

The new Ducato is easy and pleasurable to drive, thanks to optimal torque progression and front drive. And with servicing only required every 45,000 km, maintenance is easy on your pocket.

Gear Box

Fiat has also introduced an automated manual transmission option on 3.0-litre Multijet turbo-diesel versions of its Ducato.

Benefits include:

  • Lightweight self-shifter reduces emissions and fuel consumption
  • Requires less maintenance

Steering

The car-like steering wheel is small and raked so, it can be held onto with ease while keeping you're your back is fully rested against the seat. The variable action power steering makes parking effortless by reducing the steering effort to nearly half the force needed with standard power steering. At high speeds, it makes the steering firmer so it is safer and easier to handle than most other motorhomes.

Suspension

On any vehicle, the suspension system dictates its payload, road-holding and comfort. In a OVC, the suspension is a decisive factor when it comes to:

  • making full use of the maximum admissible loads on the front and rear axles
  • reducing the distance from the ground to the rear compartment floor
  • reducing tyre wear.

The new Fiat Ducato has a lower load floor, wider rear track, wider front track, and a greater GVW (3500 kg) than many of its competitors meaning its air suspension is perfect for crafting a Base Jumper.

The well-tested suspension setup has been extensively redesigned and the improvements in van performance are across the board;

  • Better suspension geometry means the wheels stay parallel regardless of vehicle movement
  • Better road-holding and less driving effort required
  • Better comfort with less friction in the shock absorbers and less transmission of vibrations
  • Less wear on the tyres
  • An increase in the maximum permitted load on each axle.

Brakes

Fiat's commitment to safety means four disk brakes and an anti-lock braking system (ABS) is standard. The ABS prevents wheel locking and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) disperses the braking force to both the front and rear axles.

Safety

The Base Jumper offers the most advanced car-derived safety devices. The cockpit is a veritable survival cell with an integrated set of:

  • reinforced structures
  • energy absorbing zones such as programmed deformation areas to protect the cockpit
  • latest generation airbags and seat belts
  • Optional extra safety approved seatbelts can be fitted in the rear lounge in all models

Tanks

Internal baffles have been installed into the water tanks. These significantly reduce the movement of fluid when a tank is less than full and consequently, improve drivability - especially when braking or going around corners. The tanks are carefully fitted up under the vehicle ensuring they are not the lowest point on the vehicle and well out of harm's way if obstacles are encountered.

Energy

Long Life Energy System
If you're going to build OCVs that can tackle the most remote tracks, then you've got to have pretty special energy supplies. Conventional vans are built to transport you from campground to campground. At the end of the day, you hook up to mains power and everything works - voilà. We wanted an OCV that allows you the freedom to camp over anywhere - without being reliant on a 240V hook up. So, we got the boys in the back room thinking. What they delivered is a unique long life energy system. The combination of a 600w 12V inverter and two 220A/H 6V batteries means you can use all your equipment and appliances anytime, anywhere. The batteries supply the power and the inverter transforms it into the current you need to run the appliances and equipment. The Base Jumper system will give you adequate power to last about four days without starting the engine or hooking up to the mains. So, when you're in your Base Jumper, the wilderness is yours to explore.

Service

As the owner of a Base Jumper, not only do you become part of the RoadCraft extended family but, you automatically join the family of Fiat owners. And if you think the RoadCraft guys are pretty switched on - rest assured, the Fiat guys are nearly as clever. They have put together the most comprehensive support program offered with new vehicles in New Zealand today: Primacare. Primacare is a factory-backed program which supports both you and your new vehicle with a 3 year or 200,000 kilometres (whichever comes first) full-vehicle warranty, 24 hour assistance for 3 years, and a 6 year corrosion-perforation warranty. What's more, if your vehicle is out of action, Primacare Assistance is there to support you 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, with technical assistance (in cases of immobilisation due to mechanical problems), non-technical assistance (in cases such as a flat tyre or running out of fuel), help with lock-outs and lost keys, assistance following an accident, assistance while touring with your vehicle, personal assistance, and medical assistance. Now that's a pretty caring family. For more information about the Primacare program click here.

Self-Containment

All RoadCraft vehicles have self containment certification. A self-contained campervan is designed to meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants for a minimum of three days, without requiring any external services or discharging any waste. Fresh water for drinking and cooking is stored in tanks. Waste water is collected in waste water tanks and disposed of via dump station facilities, connected to a proper sewerage scheme. A self-contained vehicle used properly, will have no adverse effects on the environment.

Sleeping

Whether it’s single, queen, or king, the beds are big and comfortable. The upholstery is thick and contoured to ensure you get a great night’s sleep. With all models, you have the option of adding a small bed to the swivel seats in the front so you can take the l’il nipper as well.

Basejumper S2

At 6.0m long, the Base Jumper S2 is the baby of the fleet.  It's sleek and nimble and yet far from basic.  Follow the dotted lines on the touring map down the roads other camping vehicles fear to tread.  It'll handle narrow roads and tight bends with ease.  And when you find a little piece of paradise, park up, cook up, and snuggle up in the spacious wraparound lounge or queen-sized bed.  The S2 is fully kitted out so you'll want for nothing.  Just pack up your toys, throw some food and a few bevvies in the fridge, and let the adventure begin.
