Kiwi Made
The team at RoadCraft are proud to be kiwis. In fact, they wear All Black boxers, drink Steinies (with a few exceptions), and play cricket on Christmas day. Because we’re kiwis, we’re qualified to design Overland Camping Vehicles (OCVs) for kiwis. Our designers have travelled the world studying the latest and greatest in recreational vehicles. Combine that with some old-fashioned kiwi ingenuity, and you’ve got some seriously compelling reasons to buy New Zealand made.
Designed for NZ conditions
You don’t have to travel far to see that our natural environment is unique. We have more bridges than any other country of a similar size. That means more rivers, mountains and winding narrow roads. Not all of the best roads are sealed – some of the most impressive sights are on the roads less travelled. It’s green and lush which means it rains more and your stuff gets wet. The temperature changes quickly. You can be soaking up the sunshine on a beautiful beach in the morning then freezing your butt off in the afternoon.
Not all campervans are suited to New Zealand conditions. Our RoadCraft designers have done enough camping in New Zealand to figure out that the best campervans are small but spacious, easily manoeuvrable, lower (to fit under the bridges and passes), warmer, and drier. The galley needs to be well-setup to ensure things don’t rattle and break on rough roads.
OCVs need long battery life so you don’t have to be in a commercial campground with every other man and his dog just to use your fridge and other appliances. You need plenty of windows and seating to take in the stunning views – not just while you’re driving. We could go on but you’ll be getting the picture by now.
One last thing – we drive on the left side of the road. Now that’s a problem for many imported campervans. Some have the main cabin doors on the right side (for Europe) which is just plain dangerous if you’re getting out of the van into the flow of traffic. You don’t want to return home minus a passenger.
Designed for Kiwi Lifestyle
With the great outdoors at our doorstep, it’s no wonder kiwis love to explore and play. We also love to cook and entertain – with a few bevies or full-on feast. Some OCVs are designed so you’ll have no choice but to eat out every lunch and dinner. That means the galley is small and only has the basics. Vans designed for the kiwi lifestyle have a bigger well equipped galley. They have a generous lounge area indoors and camp furniture and a portable BBQ for outdoors.
Road Ready from Day 1
New Zealand made vehicles are built to New Zealand specifications which means you don’t have to make costly and time-consuming compliance modifications before your vehicle is ready for the road. Like some other manufacturers, we can certify the vehicle is fully self-contained from the factory.
After sales service
Well-designed and well-built campervans don’t normally have problems. But, if anything does need attention, you need to know you can talk to someone who can help. There’s nothing more disheartening than dealing with sales people who don’t know your vehicle – a small issue can soon become a big one. Having easy access to a team who knows your vehicle inside out – because they built it and their reputation is staked on it – is one of the biggest benefits of buying a locally made vehicle.
Servicing
New Zealand manufacturers can provide hassle-free warranty support, quickly source parts and components, and make adjustments and repairs in the factory. The people who work on your van are the people who know it best.
If all of that is not enough to convince you to buy a locally designed and built campervan, we’ll appeal to your national loyalty. Buying New Zealand made is good for New Zealand!

American campervanners have invented 'boondocking' or "camping in the midst of nature without the use of commercial campgrounds and hookups". We'd call it just 'free camping' in the boonies.
